I have degrees in Engineering and Information Technology as well as an MBA. In spite of my extensive studies I found no clear methodology to be the key to leading a successful business. Then in 1998, I attended the A.K. Rice Institute National Leadership Institute and experienced firsthand how group dynamics are so intimately tied to leadership success. Shortly after attending a second conference the opportunity presented itself to further my experience and understanding in a training setting and I didn't hesitate to apply.
Although the program was presented as a training ground for becoming a consultant in AKRI conferences, I entered it with no real desire to become a Staff Consultant; but rather to explore group dynamics in a mentorship relationship with an experienced practitioner. This relationship was very fruitful and supported my learning through a combination of study but more importantly by doing. The process opened and/or sharpened skills that I use every day in my professional role and has served me well in obtaining multiple promotions since beginning this work.
I would recommend the Training & Certification process to anyone who finds Group Relations a compelling and useful framework. In my experience, this training and mentorship has provided invaluable insights into groups and how to effectively consult to the dynamics both within a conference setting as well as in the workplace. In short, I would do it again without hesitation - it was a very positive program.
